I may be coming to Japan in the next few month. I know Japan has plenty of internet shops, but....I do A LOT of work online and really,,,really,,,want to have a connection in my apartment.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to get it and how expensive it is? Would my employers usually help with this?

Thanks,

High-speed internet practically grows on trees. Once you have your phone line set up, just call a provider and they'll get you sorted. I've used AsahiNet since they have very high-quality English service (I speak Japanese but don't feel like sorting through technical jargon in it). Costs about $60/mo but the service is lightning fast!

Japan doesn't necessarily have a lot of internet cafes, at least compared to any other country that I've been to. Although the very big cities have reasonable amounts.

Anyway, I was very much in the same situation as you when I came to Japan. High-speed internet asap was a priority. Your employer might be able to help, and if you're in company accommodation you may have internet already set up and ready to go when you move in, if they use Leopalace apartments or if the previous occupant had it.

However, my advice (and I really can't stress this strongly enough), would be to use a website called bbapply.com. It's a service provided by an American guy in Japan, is totally free and will get you the best deal and with the least hassle. Don't be put off by the shoddy-looking website, it's a very professional service. Basically, you need to fill out a quick form when you know what your address will be, and he'll send you a list of options for your address from all the major providers. You choose the best deal, and bbapply will handle all the paperwork for you (although you have to provide some ID items - camera phone photos of these will suffice).

It's pretty easy, quick and free. I started the process about 2 weeks before moving in, and was connected with super-fast fibre-optic internet 4 days after moving into my apartment. Other people I know who didn't use this service tried to sort it out through internet providers directly, and even with the company's help, were waiting 2-3 months just to get connected and got a pretty poor deal too. So yeah, use bbapply.com.

My internet costs around Y6000 per month, fibre-optic with unlimited downloads. Not cheap, but never had a problem with it. There are cheaper options, but it's worth the extra.

Second recommendation for BBApply, they hooked me up two years ago and I've had zero problems.
