Anyone over 30 still grinding away in eikaiwa likely has other problems, but I agree that few are giving much thought to their futures. It's pretty sad. The best opportunity for them to something was when the yen was rocking. But to the extent I've been able to talk with ex-pats about finance, I've been amazed how many just live paycheck to paycheck.

Gold is definitely getting hammered in dollar terms lately. I'm still debating whether it's worth it to buy it in yen, but even if I decide to do so, I'm not really sure how to go about it. |

Yeah, most of them are in that boat. Or will be when they hit 30. Very few save, and I mean less than average Americans save. So you know, they are basically broke.
I dunno, I see gold bottoming out soonish. It may reach $1400 in the next year or so, with all the worrying going on. Not sure if I would get into it tbh.
i figure if I need gold, then really I need firearms and ammo, as it is going to hit the fan. |

And basically screwed. I don't talk with people about it very often as it's almost too uncomfortable for me to listen to just how screwed many of them are. Most are just happy living in the moment with little thought to the future.

Good luck with ammo. From what I hear from relatives in the U.S. that's the hot commodity these days. |

Yeah, it is a bit depressing being around so many people without any foresight.The party mentality never ends for some, I guess?

Do you think they will scrap a lot of the stupider towers like Chiba tower http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiba_Port_Tower? It isn't that tall, and not that many people go to it. I am sure it is just a long cash bleed for the govt.
I think a lot of provinces have them. Why not scrap them, and save money by not having a pointless uninteresting tourist 'attraction'? |

But seriously, the hubristic monuments are just the tip of the iceberg. Driving through parts of Japan, the consequences of Japan's "build it, and they'll come" approach to economic stimulus are all too plain. As one commentator put it, "The government of Japan never saw a problem it couldn't solve by paying a well-connected civil engineering firm to pour more concrete." |

My favorite example of the "build it, and they'll come" thinking was in my last ALT gig. The little town, village really, decided they needed to do something to stop their population loss and stimulate the local economy so they built a big new baseball stadium. It was beautiful. I'm sure any AA club in the U.S. would be proud to have it. The problem, however, was that the town was in the middle of nowhere and they already had three perfectly acceptable baseball fields for local clubs. Although I was long gone, I think they were really disappointed when the Nippon Ham Fighters bypassed them for Hokkaido. |

LOL on the windmill. Though that is a better tourist attraction than Chiba Tower. Seriously, they can cut these silly things out and save money on the upkeep.
The build it and they will come mentality was fine, when you are talking about urban areas, you build a stadium in an area that can support em, like Green Bay, and you can get a team. But in the middle of no where is where that theory went to crap.
Or they could have concentrated on making a few really cool things, instead of tons of 'biggest ball of thread in Southern Japan'. |
