| Hello, I'm new to this baord, but looking to head over to China (preferably Shanghai) in about 6 weeks to teach english. I've found a plethora of companies offering to send perpectives over and set them up with housing and jobs. Is this the best route to go, or is it better to simply head over and try to find something once I arrive? Any recommendations if i do go with one of these companies? |

It would be a very good idea to line up something first. Also, the local education authority is getting quite fussy about quals. Being a white native speaker may not be enough. Give some more details if you want specific advice, ie:
what are your qualifications?
what schools are you talking to?
Also, try as I might, I don't know what you intend "perpectives" to mean. |

 I thought it meant "prospectives"....as in prospective teaching jobs to be considered.... |

| Ok, so I was eating retard sandwiches yesterday as you've all made me well aware. I meant prospects. At least I'm the George Bush of this message board now. Anyway, with only a recently earned bachelor's degree, tutoring experience, and 2 years of chinese, will it be very difficult to find a decent teaching job in a popular city such as Shanghai? Is it worth it to get TEFL certified first? |

Do you eat the same sandwiches everyday, then? I think you may mean a 'prospectus', not a 'prospect' (though you may well be a 'prospect' for a recruiter). |

'Ace', 'prospectus' was 4th declension in Latin and thus had its plural as '-us'. |

You suggest two options
* recruiter/language mill.
* land here and see what happens.
A degree makes you eligible to work in a government school, which is the third option, and the way I would recommend. www.chinatefl.com may have some such positions. |

| Quite correct. Go the third route, get your feet wet, and see where you want to go from there. Recruiters are poison; ditto proprietary schools. Luck. |
