I have orally accepted an offer to teach but I have not yet signed and returned the contract. Am I already bound to teach at this school or may I still refuse the contract?

And yet - the question was still asked. That should be an answer or response to your statement.

Here's a better question: is a written contract valid, binding, or enforceable when it benefits laowai in China?

What ever your answer, it's a good bet than oral agreements have even less value than written contracts.

Refuse away, baby. Until they've begun the visa application process and contracts have been signed you're a free agent. Courteous thing to do though would be to let them know ASAP.

Does everyone need their hand held through life and forget what common sense is?
