I am completing my first year at a private Colegio and I'm wondering whether to expect or ask for a salary increase for year two.

Before I ask my school's owner, I thought I would try to determine whether annual increases are commonplace here in Mexico.

I am an American teacher and this is my first experience returning to a school for a second year here in Mexico.
I was invited to return, and we are already planning classes for the new year in August.

I am very happy with my situation, and I think my current compensation is competitive with other Colegios.
I want to be aware of any cultural differences that might exist regarding this issue here in Mexico.

In the US, an annual review and salary increase is routine.
Is it routine here in Mexico?

I get annual salary increases in January, usually the same proportion as inflation. So it's not really moving us up in the world, but keeping us at the same level. This is applied to the base salary.

I also get a different kind of annual salary increase that is common in Mexico called a quinquenio. As the name suggests this starts after 5 years of working. On my 5th anniversary on the job I started getting 5% more, that went up every year until I hit 10 years and then it held steady at 10% more until I hit 15 years then it went up to 11% more. This is a separate item, not applied to the base salary.
