They say, 'We bring people together, who want to acquire knowledge or who want to impart knowledge.' The site links don't seem to be working correctly. And I could not locate where they are located but their country area code is +49. They are supposed to help teachers and students find each other for e-learning. You have to make your own lesson plans.

Is it possible to make the most complete list in the universe for on-line ESL teaching?

Some people on a different forum are trying to do the same thing. Here is that list:

So, the question is, 'Is making around $10.00 dollars per hour for teaching on-line really that bad?'

In my opinion, it is too low. I do tutor a select few (2 or 3 really) students at that rate, but it's not worth it from a purely financial standpoint. This is partly due to the cost of living in my area and partly due to the fact that prep time is unpaid work. Because I design my own materials that are tailored to the student, the paid class time only represents a part of my time investment. If there is no pre-class or post-class work involved, then perhaps $10 isn't that bad...but it isn't good, either.

Some teachers charge $5 per hour Laughing

The beauty (and for some, curse) of online teaching is that you can do it anywhere. I live in Canada and minimum wage is $10 an hour, but I've seen teachers doing ESL online from Central America where $5 is actually a decent wage.

I guess it depends on your situation. For me, $10 is less than what McDonald's pays but I guess the working conditions are better Confused

I think this is where we, as qualified ESL teachers, can stand out in the market. I am currently at home with the children and I know a few women in my mom's group who are interested in doing this as a "WAHM" gig, but they couldn't construct a lesson on the present progressive tense to save their life (even the easier grammatical points).

Competition is heating up! I do think that dedicated students may be willing to pay more for higher quality instruction. I have actually used these services myself for French and made sure I hired a French teacher, not a person who just happens to speak French.

You know it's one of those things thats 3 of one and 5 of another... I only got paid slightly more than $10 dollars an hour at Home Depot working full time for them for years. And part of my job was driving to many different locations every day. So, when someone says I can get $10 or over and not have travel time. You know how $10 per hour looks at that point.

But, I also agree that the price of living can't be ignored. Sometimes I wish I could ignore it. And if you factor in the price of my ESL certification alone not to even touch on the price of my degree. Well, you know.

I'm currently in the process of hiring teachers for a project with my organization. I pay between $15 and $20 an hour depending on experience and credentials. When queried by clients (who are language schools) why the price isn't at $10 like so many other organizations, I explain that the teachers are professionals and not just native speakers who can carry on a conversation. They know how to teach and to give feedback and they will stay if we give them a wage that they can be almost what they are worth. The competition is fierce as I truly only want to hire the best!

Some of the profiles posted by online tutors (independent profiles) read like a bad internet dating ad. I hope to be ahead of the crowd! Shocked

Well, to this I have to say I'm somewhat familiar with advertising on-line. It's very difficult to promote anything free. And has anyone noticed how much it cost to place an ad on popular sites? It's an activity that can be difficult to partake in when starting a business. So, if teachers can put info on a profile to help them out be it myspace or daves then more power to them.

inotu-unotme,

I'm referring to online tutors who write bizarre rantings on their profiles as independent contractors with online language schools. For example, "I will only talk about vocabulary so don't bother contacting me for grammar!!" ("I will only accept men that are 6 feet tall so don't bother contacting me if you aren't!") Laughing
