Is it normal for the employer to ask the employee to provide the ticket at the beginning of a contract ? Do none of the employers provide an air ticket at beginning of contract ? |

Are you talking about after you sign the official contract? When I worked for one uni I submitted my air ticket with all the required paperwork to the FAO and got my money on the next pay. |

I wonder how many do this. And how many will actually provide a ticket ? And how many will expect the employee to bear the cost ? |

Airfare is offered two basic ways: either as a reimbursement, as your school is offering, or as a 'bonus' or whatever they call the lump sum payment. Reimbursement usually requires proof of purchase and/or travel whereas lump sum bonuses are just paid no matter what. Some teachers don't fly home during holidays so reimbursements aren't always appropriate. On the other hand, the lump sum payments are trending downward to where they don't come close to covering the return trip for many of us. |

Yes. The most common scenario is half reimbursement per term for a one year or ten month contract. Make sure you have proof of purchase. |

Or they pay for the roundtrip when the contract is finished. I know of an international school that is giving extra in each paycheck so when you finish your contract it is supposed to cover it ,but it hardly does as it is part of the tax deduction. |

In my university. teachers have to pay for their ticket. First pay check we got 7000rmb, and the last paycheck we got another 7000rmb. It does not matter if we go home or not, that is "airfare".
Every school has a different rule. |

So you are actually making less per month as you will need to pay for your flights. |

I have never had my airfare to China paid. My first job paid out at the end of the year for the return ticket. My current job pays out a bonus based on the amount of full months worked. |

Wow, every school is so different. We get a 10,000 rmb travel reimbursement; 5000 at the end of 1st semester, 5000 at end of 2nd semester. However, you have to have receipts in order to get it. If no receipts, I believe the pay out is 7000 total. But, we can turn in receipts for ANY travel - - hotel stays in Shanghai, flight to Thailand for winter break, train tickets, etc. The only things they don't take are taxi and bus receipts. |

I think we probably average 95% of teachers completing their year and I guess about 60% renewing for longer than the initial year (if even just for 6 more months.
the 5% who don't complete the year is generally made up of 3 kinds of people.
People who just couldn't do the job. (fired)
People who cause extra unnecessary problems regular people are fine with. (fired)
People who complain about pollution and quit after 6 months (not the schools fault) |

Nope. Our first year is 7000 (was 6000, and in September it will be raised 1000 to start). second year 7500, 3rd year 8, 4th and 5th year no raise.
7000 each term as airfare (if u use it or not) 600 teachers day bonus, 2000 one time travel money, and 2000 each term bonus. |

My first 4 years here I got full reimbursement at the end of the year. Round trip to Canada was about 12000RMB. I also had to provide some kind of proof, typically the email confirmation order.
This last year they capped me out at 10000RMB, and most of the contracts i looked over during the past 2-3 years have had a maximum airfare, rewarded after teaching two terms. Often in the contracts were things like "In the event that you only teach a single term, the travel reward will be 5000RMB".
To me, it looks like the "standard" is 5000RMB a term now.
Oh yeah, I also often saw a "holiday travel" or "sightseeing" travel fee of around 2000-3000RMB per year. Sometimes it was worded as a spring festival travel reward or bonus.
I should add that these were 9-5 schools, high-school and universities. Contracts from Longmans or Wallstreet often had a section about airfare, but reading theirs made it sound like they had lots of ways to withhold it. |
