How much does it depend on the place where you work and how much on the place out of where your academic program is managed? How do the practices at your location affect your work and your students?

I understand that there are many kinds of academic institutions and programs, and so I’d like to hear from anyone, who works in a program not owned by the school (place), with their experiences.
