I have a colleague who wants to come to China on a L-visa and then apply for a Z-visa because she doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a physical in the States. Is it still possible to get a Z-visa from HK? Has anyone been through with this process post July 1st?

Please share any experiences you may have.

Note: The school that we work for is totally legit and could offer her the invitation letter and Z-visa but she wants to circumvent the physical in the States.

Thank you.

Can depend on many things. The destination province will be a big factor.

To be blunt, this would be a dumb idea.

Even before July 1st, there were lots of things that could go wrong. Some Americans claimed in the past that they were refused Z visas in Hong Kong. Some provinces or offices don't let folk do the HK run thing.

Since July 1st, although as I've posted before, in theory, nothing's changed, I think with the new regulations and the as yet unknown scope of criminal check requirements, it becomes even less certain.

It's probably still do-able. I'll certainly be interested in any posts on this or other threads that give up to date information, but why on earth risk it when she can get her visa in the States. Is the extra cost of the medical really going to be less than the cost of going to and staying in Hong Kong for a few days?

You have to balance that against the real risk that she'll have to fly back to the States to get the visa or a criminal check. You also have to factor in the risk that the school when she arrives will decide that they don't actually need or want her or want her to work on the L visa for a while because they need a teacher urgently.

If you're in Shenzhen (sic?) or a health check in USA costs hundreds of dollars, then I can kind of see the point, but it still seems an unnecessary risk.

This is a dumb idea and I hope the employer in question tells her to stop being silly - I certainly wouldn't sanction this kind of (expensive) running around for no other reason than an applicant wanting to avoid a medical bill (which could be deducted from their flight allowance anyway if they asked nicely).

The job is in GZ. It seems risky to me to be honest because you never know what's going to happen in HK.

Thanks for your responses.

I live in Guangdong (where GZ is) and have never heard of anyone in Guangdong getting a z-visa in Hong Kong in the last few years. I've put it out there at least twice for other posters to post contrary information but so far no response. So I think your friend can't do it for GZ.

I have gotten a physical exam twice for visas in the US in the last 3 or 4 years. Both times the cost was about $200, skipping the x-ray. (That was at a chain, U.S Healthworks, but any Doc-in-a-Box chain ought to be similarly priced.) Not cheap but probably cheaper than a trip to Hong Kong and certainly cheaper if the school insists the teacher pays for the second visa ($140 for US citizens).
