Hi there,

I am looking at heading to Japan to teach English next year (I will be leaving for Japan late December this year and working at a mountain resort until the school year starts).
I am a New Zealand trained teacher and have a Bachelor in Education (Primary) and three years Primary teaching experience. I am not really sure where to start so would appreciate any advise from anyone currently teaching in Japan or who has done the whole live overseas/ teach overseas experience.
What are the best agencies to apply through?
Should I sort out a job before I go or look around when I get there?
How easy is it to get a job?
Any other advise would be greatly appreciated! Very Happy

You should start by looking at international school positions. Google TES international school jobs and check out the TES website. There are other sites that list international schools in Japan. Find a site like that and check out each school's website and apply for any suitable openings.

Ohayosensei is a monthly/bi-weekly job posting. International school jobs are occasionally posted there. Other better-than-average job postings can be found as well.

With your experience, I would try and aim higher than eikaiwa (private language school) and ALT (assistant language teaching position in public elementary/junior high schools) work.

You could also consider international schools in Japan - though this would take you away from the experience of working in a Japanese work environment (if that is what you are seeking. Likely from November might be a good time to start looking. Tieonline.com is a good website for this. I know you have to pay a small fee to use their site, but it is legitimate.

I recommend also finding a way to keep you certification current when over in Japan. The reality is that many people don't stay here permanently or multi-migrate back and forth between their native country in Japan. But, who knows! You might be very happy here.

I've been in Japan 3 years as a private high school teacher, and am pretty happy. But, have kept up my teaching license in ESL in New York state just in case.

Does anyone know of any schools..private high schools or middle schools that would take an older teacher.

Wanting to relocate now. Do schools pay airfare to get you to Japan?

How old?

It's been a while since I was on that end of things but, as I recall, full-time private high school or middle school positions are usually filled from the pool of available teachers in Japan. I also think it is less common for Japanese employers to cover airfare. From what I've heard, this is more common in Korea. As I said, however, my impressions may be out of date. Anyone with more current information want to weigh in on this?

Thanks for your advise! That's really helpful Smile
Are there any agencies that you can go through for international school positions or do you have to look around directly for schools?
