I never work for free. Never. If I work for you and you ask me to grade papers, prepare a test, I ask you how much you are paying me. End of conversation.
I have added demos to the list of working for free. I was recently asked to do a demo for a school that wanted me to teach 2 30 minute classes on different days that took place at peak evening rush hour in HCMC. The pay and the location (public school) were never revealed to me. That's 1 30 minute class at 4:30 a day X 2.
When VN is capable of hiring competent, professional administration and management then they can criticize foreign teachers competence. Until then shut up. |

While I agree with you on demo lessons, if you ever contemplated an educational career in the west, your attitude on grading papers or test preparation certainly would end it quickly. Here is an interesting article on professionalism:
http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/07/22/what-does-it-mean-to-be-professional-at-work
Several of the traits deemed necessary by this author seem to be lacking in many who posted here. On the other hand these traits may also be lacking in management here as well (see item 10,) so I can understand why some want to maximize the effort to compensation ratio.
My own feeling is that I have a professional obligation to do the best job that I can, however good or bad that might be. At least for those of us working in public schools, our ultimate obligation is to the students. |
