Myself and another American have been asked by A.M.A.'s headquarters to go work for A.M.A.'s newest branch at Vinh City. First off, the HQ seems dodgy about telling us the truth about paying for work permits and housing. Naturally, we are wondering if the Vinh City branch will be a negative place in which to teach. Please inform us about any news -good and/or bad-you may have for us.
Thanks! |

I haven't had the time to check out Vinh, but literally everything that I have heard and everybody I have spoken with about Vinh says that it's a total dump.
There are five gazillion threads on this board about Work Permits. But, again - Work Permits are a pretty decent-sized investment on the part of the school. In the event a teacher pulls a midnight run, the school is left holding and having already paid for a now-worthless Work Permit. But, still - they should be up front with you about it.
Still, if the school is a cowboy outfit, then what they'll generally do to avoid you having to fly out of the country and fly back in every three months is they will simply string visas together for you (they'll consult with a corrupt Immigration Official that they "have a good relationship" with in Vinh and you'll magically obtain visa renewal after visa renewal). |

There is another thread, probably on page 2 about AMA which is also known as AA.
They do not have a good repuation. But this is in Saigon and Hanoi. Nevertheless, the ownership is the same and the same style of communication, broken promises, issues with pay will likely happen.
I know people who have worked in both AMA locations, and one poster here claims they paid him less than was agreed.
There thread is here. I'll look for it and bump.
I also notice AMA/AA always seems to have an add placed and seems to be constantly hiring.
Beware of the old bait and switch trick, where where refuse to discuss salary until you do a Demo. After your demo, they will say that listening could have been longer, or the pair work or activity could have been longer, shorter, or done better, and they offer a below market wage.
Also beware of managers in his/her 20s. They are often dsyfunctional and dishonest. |

I've hired a few teachers in the past who have worked in Vinh.... not one has a good word to say about the place or people. Even most VNs people hate the place. Also the communist are hardcore there, and if you do not have a WP in Vinh they will find out and it will be a problem. Only 5 or 6 foreigners in the whole city at anyone time.

Send an email and ask for a yes/no answer. Make sure to get everything in writing and don't trust anything people say...not that it matters if they write yes/no in an email but at least your clear and have proof when they change their mind.
AMA has a terrible reputation, I've outlined my experience in the past they are dodgy at best and their main priority is hiring FT at the lowest rate possible. This is exactly what I was told during a so called interview. |
