There are lots of job postings online, but many people seems to suggest going there and pounding pavement. Why, if there are schools posting jobs online? |
This question is answered above. It's a question of supply and demand. Why would a school hire someone from abroad when there are plenty of willing candidates applying locally? These people are already in Taiwan and can come for an interview tomorrow. Who would you hire?

In that case, wouldn't you have more leverage for them to pay airfare/housing? |
Unless you're a licensed teacher or accept a university position, no school in Taiwan will pay for your airfare or housing.

Would you be able to find a better or better paying job if you go there in person, so be able to recoup your moving costs? |
I think in most cases it's not a question of finding a better job, it's a question of finding a job at all. Back in the day a person could find a teaching job in Taiwan from abroad pretty easily, but sadly, those days are gone. The only schools that you might have some luck with now are large chain schools, and schools that are located in remote areas. I would recommend you try applying to both. Apart from that, the advantage of coming to Taiwan isn't the opportunity to find a better paying job, it's the opportunity to a find A job.
Good luck! |

Taiwan is dead as far as being a viable TEFL destination goes. All the jobs are now on the mainland. That's where people need to be looking if they want and EFL position. |
