|
|
After years of reading various posts here, I am finally taking the plunge to pursue attaining my Celta with the ultimate objective of securing employment in China.
I have the option of taking the program in either Thailand (Bangkok or Phuket) or China (Beijing or Shanghai) and was wondering what might be the best course of action for me to take: do the Celta in China or Thailand? Or take the program in Thailand and then pursue employment in China once I am certified?
What are the pros and cons of participating with the program in either country?
Seeking clarity and strategy on the issue and any sage thoughts, ideas or comments would be hugely appreciated.

My friend did the CELTA in Beijing and she said one of the most helpful things was that she taught Chinese students on the course - so of course she learnt a lot about the things they specifically struggle with. If you want to work in China, it's well worth considering.
Beijing is also an amazing city (though you won't have much time to enjoy it on the course). The CELTA providers helped her to find work after too - though it wasn't in Beijing (they require 2 years' experience).
Thailand is also a great country... either will be enjoyable I suspect. Good luck! |

I did the CELTA course in Bangkok four years ago. At that time, I didn't know which Asian country I'd end up working in. It turned out to be China.
It is highly subjective of course, but personally I find Thailand to be a less stressful place than China for a number of reasons. Since the CELTA is a "busy" course, cultural and living environment during that month is important.
Above all, remember that the CELTA is highly standardized, and that you will learn the same core skills and the certificate you earn will carry the same weight regardless of where you earn it. Your practice students won't make much of a difference in how well you deal with your target students.
I am very glad I did the CELTA, but one odd thing I found in China was that it made little if any difference in finding employment there. Some of my colleagues had second-rate certification, some none at all, and some even had no university degree! So if you do the CELTA, do it to broaden your own skills, increase your confidence, and expand your future options.
The bottom line: I haven't been to Beijing or Phuket, but I've worked in Shanghai and visited Bangkok numerous times (including the CELTA). Unless you really dislike tropical heat, I strongly recommend doing the course in Thailand. |
