I am an African-American man, interested in returning to Asia (primarily Singapore) for my Master's degree. I was considering other areas of Asia (e.g. Taiwan, China, S. Korea) - to visit and possibly teach before making my return to Singapore. (This is before I kind of solidified my goals for grad school).

I emailed Mr. Karl Shine about his current post on Dave's ESL Cafe that offered free Chinese lessons, free TESL certificate, free placement after the 8 day stay in China if we were to keep with Aston, questions answered about locations and the company, etc. (Obviously, it sounded too good to be true).

Yesterday evening (probably morning in China) I got an email from Mr. Shine to follow up with him via Skype. However, reading the negative reviews of Aston online, not too mention reading the varying degrees of experiences working in provinces in China....I'm trying to figure out how to decline nicely and professionally. (Of course, I can just ignore the emails and go about my way... Wink Twisted Evil )

I wouldn't worry too much about what the recruiter has to say, have him get you in contact with a teacher at the school. Speak with the teacher about conditions and see to it the teacher isn't being monitored if at all possible.

Dear Mr Karl Shine,

Thank you for your time, however I've decided to accept a different position.

Sorry for any inconvenience and good luck recruiting a suitable applicant.

Have a nice weekend,

Tesolmaster.

That's pretty good, Toast; clear and to-the-point. Cool However, I actually sent him a reply two(?) days ago:

Hello Mr. Shine-

I apologize for my late reply. At this time, I am actually looking and weighing various options in regards to my plans of returning to, teaching (and very possibly studying) in Asia.

Mr. Shine's reply:

thank you for your mail. If I can be of any assistance as you weigh your options please let me know. If you like, e can arrange a time for an informal chat to discuss your options and preferences with Aston. If you have a Skype account please add me to your contacts, my username is 'astonkarl'. If not, please give me a number and a time I can reach you at and I will give you a call - bearing in mind the time difference. I schedule a lot of calls each day so please give me at least 24 hours notice so I can ensure I will be available.

I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Best regards,

Karl Shine
