| I have just learned that I will be interviewed to work for Hess. I had all but given up on Hess, since I sent my application in on May 3rd. I understand that Hess provides all of the teaching material and has its own methodology. I am not exactly clear, however, what their language acquisition throry is. I'm sure that Hess is a good company to work for, but I want to do more than lead kids in "repeat after me" exercises. Do the kids learn well? What do their lessons look like? |

Just to let you know, the term "theory" rarely comes up in discussions of children learning English in Taiwan.
The following terms are used more often: Be Quiet, Listen, Pay attention, Sit Down, and Shut up. |

Hess doesn't have that good a reputation and are about the worst payers in Taiwan.
This is a generalisation as they have lots of schools and they will all be different. However the pay is crap.
If you must work for a chain school take a look at www.kojenenglish.com.
They pay a little better and have a slightly better reputation. |

That alone would guarantee that I wouldn't accept their offer. How arrogant of them! I wouldn't burn any bridges but I would certainly decline and say that I had found a very suitable position with another institution.
Kojen has it's fair share of complaints, but nothing really serious. Jordan's seem rather disorganized and also have their far share of complaints. There were some concerns with the viability of Sesame Streets but I am not sure what happened here as they are still around.
Of the kids chains I would probably recommend Joy, Kid Castle, maybe Jumpstart/Headstart, Bigbyte. No major problems reported about any of these. |

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking about just heading over and finding work when I get there. It sounds like that's easy enough, but it's a little scary.
There's a part of me that is considering accepting a Hess position if offered just so I have that to count on when I get there. But then, I could look around for other work once I'm there. This seems unethical to me, but I also understand that in Taiwan, business is business. Is that kind of thing actually practically expected, or would I be commiting some kind of cardinal sin for using them like that? |

They may get upset with you if you leave they may look angry, they may even be tearful. Its all a show, ignore it. There is plenty more fodder for them out there.
It is scary just to come over and it may be difficult. But persist, ask the right questions. This is the advice that I should have followed and didn't and paid for! |
