Hi all,
My wife and I are considering a year or two in the Middle East. We are both British EFL teachers with about 7–10 years of teaching experience, with relevant BAs (either English Language/Literature or Linguistics), both with MAs (both Applied Linguistics – gained after several years of teaching) and CELTAs (gained at beginning of teaching career). I have several academic publications, some ELT publications with major ELT publishers, experience teaching at universities in Europe, and also, most recently, experience lecturing in linguistics at university. My wife's experience is all in private language schools, mostly teaching adults. We have a one-year-old daughter.
Would UAE be a good choice for us? Honestly, we would be coming primarily for the money. Would it be possible to find work at the same institution, and be able to arrange some kind of child care? What kinds of salaries could we aim for?
I'll also post this question in the Oman, Qatar, Saudi and Kuwait boards. |

You could have posted this in the general Mid East forum only but anyway...
Definitely consider the UAE over the other Gulf countries. However, if you're expecting to find plenty of current job ads, your timing isn't great; hiring for the 2013-14 academic year is pretty much over.
Plan to attend TESOL Arabia's conference and job fair next March in Dubai. Employers from universities in the region will be there to conduct face-to-face interviews. |

Thanks for replying, nomad soul. Sorry for posting the message in all the boards but I wasn't sure if everyone checked the General Mid East one. I'm in a quite a specific situation so I'm hoping to find people who have done or know people who have done similar things to make I'm considering (i.e. teaching couples with children).
I probably should have said we're not looking to move to the ME this year – it wouldn't be until next year. But that's very useful information about the TESOL Arabia conference. Are there any other events – perhaps in Europe – where it would be possible to meet lots of employers in one go? |

I worked with many teaching couples with children in the Gulf. It is very common in the universities from Kuwait down to Oman...

Since TESOL Arabia focuses on those Gulf countries you mentioned, it's your best bet for opportunities with many of the major employers from the region. There's also TESOL International (USA) and IATEFL (UK), but they're not as well attended by those same Gulf universities. Plus, TESOL Arabia's annual conference and job fair are prior to the other TESOL organizations' events, which means first dibs on teaching opportunities. Some of the universities interview just the short-listed candidates, and not surprisingly, on-the-spot job offers are made. Moreover, some employers will only short list job seekers physically attending the job fair, which is why you should consider heading to Dubai in March 2014 if you and your wife want to maximize your chances of employment in the region (and to check out Dubai). Keep in mind, competition is high.
Anyway, I suggest you visit the websites of all three TESOL organizations for more info as well as related threads within this forum and the General Mid East forum. Also, keep checking those sites, especially at the beginning of the year when job postings start trickling in on their conference/job fair pages. Alternately, there are often TEFL job ads for the universities in the region on higheredjobs.com, unijobs.ae and chronicle.com. |
