Yes, I think that's going to be the major theme this year. The phrase 'race to the bottom' is being tossed around in administrative circles.

On the up side, people who can work legally are most likely going to see more money. |

I rather doubt that since most for-profit language schools would rather forego having native speakers on staff than pay them decently. |

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the school. Bilingual colegios take a big hit on prestige when they can't find foreign staff, at least from their perspective.
Some IB schools suffer serious programming difficulties when they can't find qualified foreign staff. For example - if a school offers IB history or sciences to students in English and can't find a foreign teacher for it, it can prove very difficult to find someone locally who is not only qualified to teach the subject, but also in English. Switching the course last minute to Spanish affects the students and curriculum, and again, the prestige of the school. |

By "for-profit language school", I was thinking along the lines of "Quick Learning" and (shudder) Berlitz, not bilingual colegios and IB schools. |

The effects are felt across the board for schools...
Quick Learning doesn't bother with work permits at all so I'll bet they are unaffected, hiring the same folks on tourist visas as they always have.
I'll bet in DF, most language schools will hire on the tourist visa. I am seeing this in Puerto Vallarta too (just a random example where I've checked into it). Anyone from outside DF have a comment on this? |
