I feel honored just to be asked.
How many people do you personally know who can say that they had a job offer to teach in the single most polluted place on earth??

I can't wait to tell my friends! |

A few years ago I was chatting on Skype with a recruiter that was trying to talk me into taking a job in Shanxi province.
Me: Um, isn't that the most polluted province in China ?
Recruiter: So what, doesn't matter.
Me: Ok, thanks for your time, bye !
Amazing video, thanks for the link. |

Well, I knew next to nothing about it, but thankfully, there is Google, and there is Dave's ESL.
Oh, but here is what my recruiter told me about it:
Linfen City Introduction:
Location: Linfen City is situated in southwestern of Shanxi Province, on the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It neighbors Changzhi and Jincheng in the east, Jinzhong and Lvliang in the north, Yuncheng in the south and finally, it is separated from Shaanxi Province by the Yellow River in the west.
History: Known as Pingyang in the ancient time, Linfen was once the capital of China during the Jin Kingdom in the Warring States Period (476BC-221BC). During the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), it belonged to the Hedong Shire, one of the forty-eighty shires of the nation. Many places in present Linfen had their names originated during the Sui Dynasty (581-618). Physical Features: There are Zhongtiao Mountain, Taiyue Mountain and Lvliang Mountains in the east and west of the city. In the center stands the Linfen Basin. Mountains and hills are the main characteristic of the land, occupying about eighty percent of the city's territory. Fenhe River, one of the main branches of the Yellow River, flows through the city centre. |

And you think any other city or the world in general isn't polluted or that your life will actually be shortened by living there for a while? Media-hype. |

Not nearly to the extent Linfen is - it's number 1.

Yes, I think this!

How is it media-hype? Even China admits it.
http://www.worstpolluted.org/projects_reports/display/22
" China's State Environmental Protection Agency says that Linfen has the worst air in the country, which is saying something, considering that the World Bank has reported that 16 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are Chinese.

Hey, why pick on Linfen? "Toxic" and "China" seem to be almost synonymous these days:
"Toxic" and "China": 66,500,000 results on Google and counting! |
Well, for my part, I was not really trying to get all serious or anything -the topic has pretty much been covered already on Dave's.
I was just JoeKing, that's all...mostly about the recruiter side of it....never expected to be challenged on it.

What was the offer, anyway? Doesn't seem like the local universities add much in terms of "hazard pay":
|
The offer was for a public HS, RMB10000, 20 hours of class time - not bad, under normal conditions...I would not consider that enough hazard pay though. |

I'd do it for RMB100,000 per month and a free space suit. |

Hey I just turned down Disney English as well, because after reading some posts of people who worked there, I knew I could not stomach their "environment" either. |

Writing on the wall: "If you dump trash here, your entire family will die!"
Now that's driving the point home! |
