Milieu

This is a dodgy one. I like it, but when English speakers say it with a French "twist", I hate it.

Dear Sasha,

Dare I make the inference?

"The wise old man (also called senex, sage or sophos) is an archetype as described by Carl Jung, as well as a classic literary figure, and may be seen as a stock character. The wise old man can be a profound philosopher distinguished for wisdom and sound judgment."

If so, may I also presume that inference excludes my opioion regarding gay marriage? Very Happy

I'm setting myself up here, so be gentle.

Dear Johnslat

Another favourite word of mine: oxymoron. An example of which is, gay marriage. Married life is far from joyous.

Best wishes

Gentleman Sasha

Well, as they say, you’re only as old as you feel.

I’m just not all that familiar with the Orphan Annie comic strip and later film. “Daddy Warbucks” as a term to describe someone who is wealthy (enough to fund others) is probably more familiar to Americans.

Daddy Warbucks is the ultimate symbol of piggie power. Though rising from humble ranks himself, he made his money by exploiting the working man and from the carnage of the First World War - hence his name.

But hey, he adopted a cute lil orphan, so all is forgiven.

Dear Sasha,

Scot47 will be pleased:

"ox·ter noun \ˈäk-stər\

Definition of OXTER

1
chiefly Scottish & Irish : armpit 1
2
chiefly Scottish & Irish : arm
Origin of OXTER

Middle English (Scots), alteration of Old English ōxta; akin to Old English eax axis, axle — more at axis
First Known Use: 15th century"

This is enriching my vocabulary Very Happy

Now, I can say, " Saudi Arabia, the oxter of the world" without most people perceiving any insult.

Very handy.

Regards,
John Very Happy
