TokyoLiz,

I disagree.

I think you will find that most of our students have plenty of time to watch what passes for television programing for hours on end, sleep all weekend or walk around shopping areas in their school uniforms.

My point was that most students will answer: shopping or sleeping.

And given the question, "What did you do on the weekend?"

The number 1 answer, "Survey says: _____________!"

Cheers,
S

It's a toss up between "sleeping" or "cleaning my room."

Why do these Japanese folks' rooms get so untidy that they need to spend the whole weekend cleaning it?

Or is "cleaning my room" code for something else, perhaps?

T-bone,

You must teach girls.

Never heard a boy say, "clean my room".

Furthermore, I have never myself, nor did I ever know anyone back in HS that spent time sleeping on the weekend. Then again, I didn't grow up here.

Victims of their environment?

Is this unique to Japan?

Cheers,
S

I totally agree Sweetsee & Ntropy. Students here have way too much free time and too much money to waste in that free time.

To return to the orginal title of the thread "Defining the essence of Japan..."

I would say Crap Music.

I mean the whole lot, from the Okinawan caterwaul, to the 'sounds like my embarrasing uncle trying to sing after too much whisky' enka and the re-cyled re-mangled audio vomit of J-Pop.

Ok..maybe Koto music sounds nice.. Smile

You said it AgentmulderUK,

There is no differentiation between what passes for music and noise.

How about the blaring "music" in the local super or Mos Burger?

Can't they handle a bit of piece of quiet. Why do they insist or at least complain about the noise pollution in the stores. I often turn down the annoying taped music in the grocery stores when I walk past.

What about the vans during election time blasting their slogans and campaign diatribes? If I could vote, that would be the surest way not to get it.

Actually, I heard both boys and girls say this a lot-- more from the guys, actually! But I taught in an eikaiwa-- more college students, and very few HS students.

Maybe that makes a difference?

Right so the good stuff I remember must be a figment of my imagination then. Sorry it doesn't fit into your box.

Perhaps you were trying to define the essence of the British mind...

I find lots of the Japanese tunes to be fairly good actually; granted some are an earsore, however, you'll find that with almost all music from around the world.

You're asking me to list favorable music based on my opinion. When it comes down to opinions there is no right or wrong.

Not a big pop music fan (as in wouldn't spend the money for it) but I don't find Japanese pop music too offensive. What I do find really annoying is the VOLUME at which it is often played in public areas. I also can't stand the election diatribe trucks. I live in a big public housing complex and there is a small park across the street. Whenever there is an election, they park out there on Saturdays starting at about 8 am and don't shut up until it gets dark outside. I am considering stockpiling spoiled produce for the next election in Japan.

But the thing that defines Japan in all this is the fact that no one bats an eyelid at all this noise pollution. How they do this mystifies me.

Recently camped at the beach in Izu and there were young non-Japanese kids lighting off bottle rockets and playing the car stereo at deafening levels all night long on the road just above our camp.

No one said a word to these cretins.
