A student of mine wanted to say in writing that her friend "struck" the side of his head, just after leaving home and said, Oh no, I forgot my keys!

To me struck seems so violent. I have thought of slap or maybe thump or knock. Does anyone have a better idea or know if there is a specific word that is used?

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I think that slapped might be the best one for my student to remember.

Dear fluffyhamster,

Thanks for reminding me - I want to put that on the "Least Favored Words" thread. It's so badly descriptive, I think. It makes it sound like one brings one's palm up in front of one's face, which is really not what one does (at least I've never seen it done.)

One gives a slap or a smack to the SIDE of one's head, not to the face, I'd say.

I'll put "Talk to the hand" on that thread, too.Very Happy
Regards,
John
