I always brought my original degrees with me. I never parted with them, and i was never asked for them once I got to China. However, when I had to make a move from one school to another in the same city, being able to show my degrees seemed to make a difference to the prospective employer, even though by then it was pretty well bent out of shape. How much it impressed him, I don't know.
But no, you probably won't ever be asked for it once you arrive. Bring it along anyway.
No transcripts will be required by anyone anywhere unless you teach in a western university or college. |

Yeah, that's gonna be the bottom line. My reply was based on my experience. |

Bring originals better to have 'em and not need 'em, then need 'em and not have 'em. We've always been asked for them.
If someone wants to take them out of your sight, take a photocopy for yourself and ask the person who's taking the docs to sign and date the copy. Same with passports, apartment contracts, service receipts or other certificates such as birth/marriage.
Learnt this the hard way. |

I didn't bring my degree. I needed it. I had to call home, get someone to find it in my boxes then courier it to me. If you don't need it at one school or in one country you might next time you move. It's a piece of paper and won't weigh you down, why not bring it? |

Those who were asked to show a degree once you got to China: were you teaching at a public institution or a private school? And how recently were you asked.
I'm asking this because I've been stateside for 18 months, and I'm reading all sorts of things that weren't happening before I left China.
I've always submitted a scan upon application. It's possible that the fact that I had my degrees authenticated by both the U.S. government and the Chinese government may have spared me. |

Been asked every time we've worked here since 2002!
Between me and my husband the list of places includes: private language schools, international schools, joint-venture universities and joint-venture providers.
Not just one province either, Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong have all asked to see them.
They were needed for both the Z visa to RP and the FEC.
Before we arrived scanned copies have always been accepted but on arrival originals were expected to be produced.
@Bud Powell there's a wind of change blowing and it ain't a bad thing!

Yes, there's no possible reason why someone who hasn't been in China for 18 months could have an interest. Nobody ever thinks about coming back.
Come on, beckyshaile, we rely on you for high quality misanthropy. Frankly, this just isn't up to your usual standard.
Anyway, the need for original documents is based on the local PSB, not the school. For instance everyone in my city needs the originals. |

Wow. I've NEVER been asked for the original degrees at any time during my time in China! My experience has been limited primarily to public universities and colleges in Jiangsu. I shouldn't act surprised by the lack of any uniform code or procedure in China.
I agree that the times are probably a'changin' for the better in some way. |

I've never been asked for anything other than scanned copies - not that anything I have would be a deal breaker anyway. |

Weird that you got asked for them in Heilongjiang. My friend worked there for two years, at two different schools, never needed them. |
