Honestly I think the Japanese occupation / colonization would have been more like what happened in Africa - not necessarily laying the basis for a sustainable future.

French colonies essentially wound up being disasters because of ruling policies. A lot of people might complain about living in former colonies, but this basically blaming others for the failure of post-colonial leadership (see Argentina, for example).

Japan has always been nationalistic. One of the problems is that politicians in Japan are basically idiots (voter turnout is fairly skewed towards certain groups).

Alternatively, Japanese colonisation could have been more akin to what happened in North America - wipe out most of the original population, and dispossess the rest. I think most posters would agree that that led to a fairly sustainable future for the empire-builders, despite the horrific human costs.

Well, the original colinization of Japan followed that pattern.* People came from the Korean Penisula and wiped out the Ainu.

I don't know much about Japanese politics but reading through this thread is somewhat enlightening..
