Anyone who would consider voting for Bush--the worst of the 43 presidents and with the lowest IQ (I am all for helping out special needs folks, but not by making them president and giving them an army and nuclear weapons to play with!)--is, yes, truly absent. Send in your ballot, Gringo--add your bit to the accelerating destruction of the planet. Your kids will love you for it....

I'm in agreement, moonraven. Taking a monopoly like Walmart, a corporation that helps accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries, that refuses to promote women to managerial positions, that pays their workers very poorly and refuses to allow them to unionize, that contributes heavily to globalization, wage abuse, exclusion of contraceptive coverage in insurance plans, violations of child labor laws... etc etc... and equating all of this with "cultural identity". Exclamation

Wow, reality check. I don't think many level-headed Americans would like to identify themselves "culturally" to such a business (as most of them are not aware of Walmart's actual behaivor). You can still see American movies, eat American food, listen to American music and read American books without having any sort of contact or relation to a corporation whose famous low prices are the product of human, environmental, and global misery.

Having 20 crazy Muslims chanting death to America and death to George Bush in your face kind of changes your mind very quickly. If those guys hate him so much, maybe i should love him even more. I named my first born son, George because other babies born at the hospital were named Osama.

I don't believe that this forum should be a breeding ground for racism--"crazy Muslims"? They sound pretty sane to me--especially given the comparative options you mentioned....

Weona, thanks, but on a very related topic, I would like to point out that America includes a lot of other countries besides the US of A--a whole hemisphere of them, in fact. And as for folks from the States not being aware of what WalMart does--I will agree up to the word AWARE in your statement, as they have been brainwashed for so many years that awareness has been denied to the majority of them. However, there are progressive Internet news sites that are based in the U.S.--Common Dreams, for example, that routinely carry stories about entire towns and cities--and even some states--protesting against Wal Mart's arrival. Anyone who is not aware of what WalMart does has very deliberately chosen to be ignorant.

At this time on the planet, ignorance is not strength (like Big Brother said it was)--it is a very destructive weakness.

[quote="Gringo Greg"]I know you had a bad time of it, followed your posts for a few years, even on the old board. You fell into a bad situation. You are right Queretaro is just as expensive as the DF and the wages are less for foreign teachers.

I had a good time with private teaching in Mexico City. I guess it matters how you set it up. Students spend a lot of money and expect a professional course, but they are not willing to submit to professionalism. They get a Gringo "friend" to teach them and they don't really treat it like a real class.

My rules for teaching private classes are as follows:
1) I don't teach friends.
2) Students pay for 10 hours at a time, in advance.
3) Students are given 1 freebie cancellation per 10 hour course and to use it, they need to let the teacher know 24 hours in advance.
4) Students pay for their coursebook up front.
5) The class starts and ends at the agreed time, though I knew most people were late, so if the students was less than 15 minutes late, I made up the time at the end of class.
6) Students are told of the rules in advance.

Teacher have it tough, we need to be teachers, businessmen and entertainers all at the same time., except if you are lucky enough to teach in a university.

I asked if you had though about going back, Waygug, because I know how much you love the place and a few years of teaching in a different place can change your perspective a lot..if I am not mistaken, Queretaro was your first teaching job.

------------------

Your ideas are sound. I did try some of them when I was there. I tried to get them to pay in advance etc. But they would always promise to meet with me and "discuss" the conditions and then not show up.

I probably would have tried harder to stick it out there, but my degree was not appostillaed, among other financial difficulties I was having, so I had to return to Canada. I owed money back home and I couldn't hope to pay it working in Mexico.

Of all the people I know in Queretaro, the only ones who stayed for more than a year all work at tec de monterrey. I know of no one who was happy with their earnings at a private language institute. Of course, I am only one person, and I don't know everyone there.

I did meet a guy who taught both English and German lessons. He said he could charge a lot more for the German classes because he is the only guy offering them, so he is able to survive on his wages.

anyway, that's my 2 cents.

About Mr. Bush........... Rolling Eyes oh brother. don't get me started.
I will just say that I don't trust the guy. When he was "elected" everyone I knew felt a sense of dread, and by and large, that sense was correct.

As for crazy Muslims........ I don't deny that they exist, but I don't agree that warmongering is any kind of solution. Is the world safer since the US invaded Iraq? I don't think so. If anything, Bush's actions have enraged even the more passive elements of the Muslim world, giving rise to "new Osamas" by the thousands.

Bush's days are numbered. I just hope the American public gets rid of him before he can do any more damage.

Cheers

Again, Moonraven has a hard time reading. Those 20 Muslims were indeed crazy. Smile Not all Muslims are crazy, not even most, just a few, just like there are a few crazy gringos, a few crazy mexicans, a few crazy euros and a few crazy Indigenous persons, whatever that is. Smile

Laughing

And for reference, this happenned on September 19th, 2001. The local head of the Isalmic Council personally apologized to me for the misdeeds of the "crazy people." His words not mine. Smile

I have no problems reading. Nor complaining when someone tries to turn this forum into a hate site. I don't care how you "contextualize" your comment after the fact--it was racist and anti-Muslim. Moreover, this is not the first time you have said very ugly things to me and others who don't share your ultra-rightwing political and social views.

yes, I believe you said that I was a wife beater and child abuser andf that my wife was a Thai bar girl since as you said, all women in Thailand are bar girls. What ugly thing did I say to you? Smile Please let the forum know. Smile

The only person posting hate messages to this site are you. Got a question, would you consider the men who beheaded Paul Johnson to be crazy? Is it hateful to call those men crazy?

Mai pen rai, this is a Mexico job forum, not a place to call people names. You should relax and start having some fun and not be so serious, Moonie.

This is my last post on this subject as it is turning into a thread of personal attacks and I haven't got the time for it and most users don't care about it.
