Hi,

I am extremely confused about the train systems in Japan more specifically the Rail pass. I am getting a Working Visa and I want to travel around Japan. Can I purchase a Rail Pass before I come? I've heard this pass is a really good way to see the country and it is only for foreigners with a tourist visa. How does this work? Am I able to do this? and...Can anyone please explain the best 'traveling around' options for Japan from your experience?

Thanks

If you want to use a Japan Rail Pass, it must be purchased before you come to Japan and you must show your tourist pass to validate the ticket. Those of us who are working stiffs here cannot partake in this discounted travel option.

If you are over 65, you can also get a cheaper pass.

There is also a juhachi kippu pass to travel during school holidays. It is only for slow trains and costs about 11,000 yen for a 5 day pass. This pass can be used for up to 5 people.

So the Rail pass for a tourist is simply a discounted rate? All working foreigners can still purchase a Rail pass but it would be at a higher rate, right? or not. Hmmm...

No, ajia.

The Japan Rail Pass (its formal name) is ONLY for tourists. You can buy it for a one, two, or three week period of use, but you must be a tourist. People with work visas cannot buy it. There are other options for people who are here on work visas, as Gordon tried to point out.
