Wuhan area, Hubei. Hot in summer and cold in winter. Very. Also very humid. Even when the temperature isn't extreme, it rains a lot. |

Agreed...the teachers who were going to have their pay cut unsurprisingly all left. Plenty of job options available around the place to not have to put up with such crap. Alas they all seem to have been easily replaced at the discount rate - likely by Ukranians and Filippinos again. Although they are currently trying to find a specialized Business teacher with at least a Masters degree for 5,000 a month, lol. My situation financially has remained unchanged, but the storm clouds of penny pinching and spending 100rmb to save 5 mao seem to be brewing. Last contract at the current school for me. |

Id struggle to accept pay decreases too. My salary does rise with every new contract, but it starts at a very low base. Base hasnt changed for many years either. My utilities allowance has risen and the teacher accomodation has been overhauled, but the salary is still a sore point really. Not sore enough to leave though.
In fairness ... student numbers are significantly lower than in previous years, and the student demographic has changed a lot too. Effects of recession / inflation etc I think. When I first worked here in 2009 many of the students had saved up in rather modest and low paid jobs, seeing English as a way to improve their lot. We have very few of these students now and most of my students are from rich backgrounds or have been successful already. The lower income students cant risk giving up work to study it seems. (Our students study a full time schedule in working hours so quit their jobs / take a leave of absence to study with us).
It would be unrealistic to ask for great pay increases when I can see the turnover Im generating is much lower per class than it was in previous years. |

I've noticed this as well and several students have told me that their siblings are taking jobs right out of high school, usually as drivers or shop staff. |

I've noticed this also. A Uni degree is losing it's luster pretty quickly in China. Too many eat the expense of a Uni degree only to end up as a driver or shop worker. Part of the problem is that the Chinese employers know how meaningless their degrees are. I don't know about the top tier Uni's but from what I see....nobody fails.
Though enrollment in language mills has also dropped from what I see...or perhaps there are simply more of them. |

For what it's worth based on my personal situation I couldn't survive on any less than 6,000 per month without dipping into my own savings. |
Your school most have a lot of foreign teachers then. |
