Inspired by all of the abhorrent TV commercials I've seen of late for the hackneyed 'Soundtrack to the Summer', I'd like to ask which tracks would you compile for the ultimate 'TEFL Soundtrack'? |

How about 'Words' by Boyzone ... 'ABC' by the Jackson Five ...
(This CD compilation is not really all that marketable, is it?) |

Thanks For The Memories, and I Found My Thrill by Fats Domino (for the ever-enthralled)
Themes from The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits (for those in war zones or looney bins)
Crazy by Patsy Cline (for obvious reasons sometimes)
Like a Virgin by Madonna (for the newbies)
Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley (for split shift workers and those in private high schools)
Theme from Fahrenheit 451 (for those of us who have never found the right textbook)
Memories by Barbra Streisand (for all of those students who forget)
Ain't That A Shame by Fats Domino (for the grammar purists)
The Wall by Pink Floyd (what we all feel we have hit or talked to from time to time)
School's Out (For Summer) by Alice Cooper (for the lucky ones)
Bewildered by Mark Knopfler (for "those" students who just don't get it)
Children's version would have all of the songs from Grammar House Rock:
Noun: "A Noun is a Person, Place, or Thing"
Verb: "Verb: That's What's Happening"
Adverb: "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Adverbs Here"
Pronoun: "Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla"
Adjective: "Unpack Your Adjectives"
Conjunction: "Conjunction Junction"
Interjection: "Interjections!"

9 to 5 by Dolly Parton (for those in HS or in a real grind of a job)
Wasted Days, Wasted Nights by Freddie Fender (for the unprepared or for those only in this for the partying)
Money by several artists (for the greedy or the well-off)
Karma Chameleon by Culture Club (for those suffering culture shock?) |

The Clash - Career Opportunities ("the ones that never knock...")
Martin Ansell - The Englishman Abroad (well, it works better for some of us, I guess...)
The Jam - To Be Someone (for anyone who's been to Asia & back home)
Pixies - U-Mass ("it's educational!")
Bobby Darrin - Beyond the Sea
Weezer - Across the Sea (these 2 are for anyone whose TEFLing has dumped a long-distance 'relationship' upon them)
Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger (for all of those ex-employers)
The Clash - The Magnificent Seven |

Well, Jimmy Buffett is one of my obsessions. I'm an archbishop for the Church of Buffett, Orthodox. http://www.cobo.org/congregate/ So, it is my duty to inform you that the Great One...er... Jimmy Buffett didn't actually sing the I-95 Song. It was probably sung by David Allen Cole (a man who sings some funny songs when he's not being a racist).
Perhaps, Far Side of the World; Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes; We Are the People Our Parents Warned Us About; and Lage no Mai (the man who gave up his own name for those of us who don't have names students can pronounce) would be some choices.
OK. I'll step down from the pulpit now. Talk amongst yourselves. |

Country Roads by John Denver (for those working in rural areas)
Show Me the Way to Go Home by Irving King (for the disillusioned or culture shocked or penniless)
Long and Winding Road by The Beatles (for those finding it hard to return home)
I Feel Good by James Brown (for those, well, enjoying the ride)
If I Only Had a Brain by E.Y. Harburg (for "those" students)
We're Off to See the Wizard by E.Y. Harburg (for students who consider their teacher a god)
Follow the Yellow Brick Road, and Somewhere Over The Rainbow by E.Y. Harburg (for the dreamers)
Small Victory by Garnet Rogers (for those tiny successes that we sometimes manage to find) |
