I think whoever gave you the advice 'you can't teach in another city' (even if they work in the US/UK/AUS consulate) is mistaken. I am sure other FTs working at language schools are sometimes asked to do this, and regardless of whether they have their passport with them or not.
Haining , or an hour from Haining, is not out in the sticks, and your school provided transport, so you were in their charge, so I would not worry about .
I know Haining quite well (BTW) and don't envy you being there - it is very dull in my view. Only 100 km or so from Shanghai , but still difficult to reach. . |

How is taking an hour train "difficult to reach"? Also, it's just off the SO1 Highway. Difficult to get to is traveling the same distance only by converted mini-van with 15 other people for three and a half hours over unpaved roads. If you think that Haining difficult to get to Id hate to see how you would fair in a real developing country.

Im sorry, but if an officer tells me something while Im in a foreign country Im going to believe him unless I get some kind of official source, or higher official to contradict. |

You were the one who got anxious an hour away from Haining without your passport ! |

Sorry for being short with you guys. I know you dont have to be here or give any kind of good or decent advice, you choose to and no one deserves grief for that. I apologize for being a hole.
With that said, its not the remoteness that makes me anxious. Id be just as anxious if I were in England under similar situations. |
