|

There are 1.9 Libyan Dinar to 1 English Pound Sterling or $1.55.
Prices inflate in double digit percentages when they do increase.
A chicken=10 LYD (5 quid)...these were 5 LYD before the war.
A portion of Edam cheese=3 LYD
A restaurant meal=20-50 LYD
A small TV= 160LYD
A can of Coke=0.75 LYD
A hamburger=2 LYD
A shoarma=1.5 LYD
Phone calls home 1 LYD/minute and Skype doesn't work in some places
Cigarettes=About 2.5-3 LYD
A big bottle of water=1 LYD
Hotels in Tripoli=About 150 LYD
Mutton=20 LYD/Kg
Minced beef=10 LYD/Kg
Fish= About 20 LYD/Kg
Tin of tuna=2-2.5 LYD
A illicit bottle= 100 LYD and people have died on cheap hooch here.
This all looks pretty cheap except for the calls and meat but you must bare in mind that you fritter lots of money in Tripoli or Benghazi. There is NO social life in Libya, so the only reason for being here is saving. $60,000 is what should be paid. I'm on more and have free housing, food and 5-6 flights home a year...oh and BUPA. If you aren't by a beach and on a compound life her sucks. On a compound (oil related) you will have a modest social life but also get home loads.
Forget language schools, the British Council and contractors like APT (Al-Mawared) because the pay is appalling.

Easy. If you are direct hire with an oil company, you get more money and loads of time off Scott. I'm by the sea, have a car and we have barbecues with all the usual home made excitement. And job security is better here. In the Gulf, you can get fired for trying to do your job properly. |

Call May Dean at Smart in London. She recruits for NOC companies. |
