Does being in your late 30s make finding a job more difficult?

Depends really on the type of students being taught - there are a lot of kindergartens and edutainment language school chains that prefer younglings, whereas corporate courses and some universities might prefer a more mature voice. Not that either is superior per se, just the appeasal of different markets.

You know you've been in China too long when...

#541 - you have lost sight of what 'professional' ever meant
#542 - you substitute actual humor for seedy references

Hostels even downtown can be quite cheap. From what I hear 70-150 per night. Small noodle restaurants are everywhere and are also super cheap. 10-20rmb. Local breakfast usually runs about 5rmb. Not fine dining, but it'll feed you. Don't listen to the usual "shanghai is too expensive" and "don't come here, you won't hack it" crowd here on Dave's. Plenty of resources for living on a budget. Not exactly glamorous, but doable. Most of the posters here will just list reasons why you shouldn't come.
