Okay, this would be pretty tight:
Salary is 1,800 Polish złoty net p.c.m.
We offer a competitive package which also includes accommodation (incl. all bills), a travel allowance and 20 days paid holiday per 9 month contract. Koszalin is an excellent base for exploring Poland and Central Europe with direct connections to Berlin and Warsaw, and just a 20 minutes away from the Baltic coast.
How LOW can you go?
Although it apparently does pay all the apt expenses. |

Sounds like IH?
This is not a living wage in Europe. |

Poland's a nice place but you've really got to chase the cash. If I were to do it now, I'd go with the idea that it's a year of fun, chasing tail and enjoying the nightlife and booze culture. Oh and nice students (get them anywhere). |

Been there, done that. My least favorite hostel experience was at a hostel in Warsaw which would 'close for cleaning' every day between 10am and 4pm, so everyone had to be out of the rooms during that time. Then, during the nights I couldn't sleep because groups of kids were giggling, running through the halls and slamming doors until the wee hours.
Screw 8-bed hostel rooms. If I was pressed for money to travel, I'd give this a try: https://www.couchsurfing.org/ Basically, it's a worldwide facebook you can use to find people who are willing to put you up for a night or two. They also have regular weekly meetings in cafes and pubs.
I've never couch surfed, but the meetings are usually pretty cool and a great chance to meet people (mostly, you guessed it, uni students) from all over the world.
Fun Fact: It's a lot easier to find a couch to surf if you are a single woman rather than a man. Can you believe that? |

A bit of planning and you can often pick up decent accommodation for really next to nothing. http://www.airbnb.com is fantastic for finding affordable apartments - I rented a very nice summer house this summer for 20 euro a night (for the house, not per person) in a beautiful location in Austria, and I've also rented very nice apartments all over the place for less than 100zl a night - owners are very willing to negotiate, especially at less busy times.
No need to go anywhere near hostels, unless you can find an excellent deal on private rooms. I found a great place in Berlin once - private en suite room, free (and ample) parking and a cracking bar within - all for 18 Euro a night. Normal price was something around 70 euro, but last minute deals are always fantastic in summer.
Yes, I could pay more - but why pay 60-100 euro a night for something that I'll barely use? Especially in Berlin, a room is for sleeping and showering in, nothing else. |

Even if this fella finds these book-ten-years-in-advance hostels, 20 Euro is still more than he makes a day. Then he's gotta get there and eat and presumably drink.
I've been out in Berlin an awful lot and done 3 city breaks there in the last 8 weeks. On 1,800Zl a month, he can forget Berlin. The all day S-bahn ticket is 6.50 Euro and the bikes are 10-20 Euro a day to rent. A cheap, cheap hotel anywhere near a nice place is not less than 50. FFS a kebab is 5 and a Guiness 4.5. Koszalin to Berlin and back, I'd say about 80. Unless he takes a guitar and busks, he'll be up the creek very quickly.
Of course there is the 8 to a room hostel option to cut costs but he's still gotta LIVE. The last 3 sit down meals I've had there cost, 60, 60 and 140 and that was with very little to drink....and all prices I quote are in Euros. |

A "very nice summer house" in the summer in Austria.....for 20 euro a night, regardless of the number of guests? hmmm.....

are we seriously considering "couch surfing" as a viable option? I can't IMAGINE crashing on some complete stranger's couch for even a single night. It's not your place which means you have no idea who's gonna come walking through that door, you've gotta trust the person cleans the place, that the bathroom will be clean......you're putting a lot of trust in a complete stranger.....a stranger that rents his couch out to complete strangers. |

I know a couple of guys who have used this system all over the world. Amazes me but it seems to work for them and people are different in their standards and acceptance of situations.
I didn't realize they were doing meet-ups though. Is it also a de facto social network? |

Yes, couch surfing is innately a bit riskier than hotels or hostels. But there is a vouching system on the site whereby hosts can accrue credit as guests comment that their stay was pleasant and without any unwelcome...intrusions.
Different strokes for different folks.
The site is basically another facebook, with an emphasis on organizing meetings, language exchanges, picnics, etc. Heck, you can log in with your facebook account. The group is active and meets several times a week in Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and other Polish cities. |
