OP, just where is English taught "as a second language abroad"? Are you referring to the UK , Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, since you are American?

| Actually, good question. I assumed the OP meant in programs where foreigners come to Anglophone countries to study English, but now realize that may not actually have been her intent. |
