Finally , I would avoid Guangzhou - dirty , crowded, hot and humid.
Shenzhen is a cleaner, more developed and open city. (just my opinion) |
I disagree here. Shenzhen is not really any nicer.
But besides that, I would always recommend a China newbie starts in Shenzhen/Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou - home comforts are never far away and it's easier to get out of China back home from places like these. |
This is EXACTLY my thinking. We're contemplating taking the kiddos to China beginning Spring Semester, and one thing I'm looking for is a school that is no more than 2 hours away from a major airport. Just in case... |

This advice is spot-on. If you don't speak Mandarin, and/or you're not already experienced living as an expat on your own in Asia, stick with those places.
As for bringing kids along on an FT's salary, I would not recommend that, to put it bluntly. If one of the parents can get sent to China by his/her company, and be fully taken care of there, then that might be another kettle of fish. |

| Honestly you shouldn't only consider the salary you'll be getting from your day job. Many people are looking for a foreign teacher to tutor their children on the weekend. This can double the money you earn. I would not consider living in the accommodations that the school offers. It's better to get a living stipend and find your own place. It's a challenge, but not impossible. If you do come here, be open to meeting as many people as you can at first. Most of them will be casual, but once you get to know some local Chinese teachers that teach English and can recommend you to the parents, you will have plenty of students. Learning Mandarin is always a great idea. Picking up some Cantonese will also go a long way with the Guangdong people. Few foreigners learn it and although they will laugh at you for trying to speak it, they appreciate it tremendously. |
