This is a link to website that takes updated air quality samples all across the world and there are tons of stats on China. If you are looking at a job in a new city and air quality is important to you, you need take a look at this.

that sites been posted on here several times this year as I recall. Pretty much a given that Chinese cities are polluted, nothing new there even if you've never set foot in China. If you want cleaner air then all you need to know is this, go west or stick to some places along the coast.
