We make up Friday's classes today. I don't have any Friday classes. This is VERY common. Weekends are not "weekends" in the Western sense; it doesn't matter though, every day's a holiday in China!
Ok one last thing about what led to my initial confusion. After reading everyone's replies I clarified with the other teacher. Yes, she said, Thursday is the holiday, not Friday, but for some reason it's Thursday's classes we are making up. I don't teach class on Thursdays, so I should have today off just like you lucky dogs. But noooo, I have to cover for the teacher who does teach on Thurdays because she is part-time hourly and made other plans.

I taught with a couple of young American guys who got a revised schedule in advance of a holiday.
It had them both teaching Thursday afternoon.
Without checking with the DTA they ignored the new schedule on the basis that Thursday PM was the normal free afternoon.
Luckily they were still on campus to field the 'where the hell are you, your classes are waiting' phonecall.
Moral of story: Ask and ask again!

That's it!

Like a Seinfeld episode - toss a a $10 out the window and see what happens - you just might find one in your suit jacket pocket.

I get about 3 1/2 months of paid vacation a year - I won't complain about working an extra day here or there.

Yes, the "Opposite" episode - George was up, Elaine was down, and Jerry was "even Steven".

In Seinfeld mode most of the time it can be the Bizarro.
Remember? Elaine met 3 guys who looked like Jerry George and Kramer but who acted the opposite.
The Kramer guy bought 'Jerry' a sack full of groceries.

A teacher at my school has told the administration he flatly refuses to teach make up classes before/after holidays because they are a breach of contract. He's technically correct. The administration then asked him nicely to please make up the classes, then shrugged their shoulders and acquiesced. He's been doing this for three years

Sadly, none of us have his stonking great balls of steel and have not raised the same protest.

Sept 19th was the holiday and that's the only day people are entitled to be off. If there were no rearranging of classes then people would be working on Wednesday, off Thursday, back to work Friday then have a regular 2 day weekend. By rearranging classes you get a three day weekend instead of two days. The classes today are for Friday classes. If you have no classes on that particular day then your holiday is extended another day. Sometimes you luck out, other times you don't. All balances out somewhere.

See, if one of those all-important decision makers was on his (or her) game, we would have worked LAST Sunday up until Wednesday and then gotten a 4-day "holiday". Let's see: work 4 days, get off 4 days, work a normal 5 day week.

Or, work 3 days, get off 3 days, work a 6 day week. Which one would YOU have preferred?

We also get to work next Sunday (and Monday - Saturday off) before the 7 day break. Again, why not push on through and work Sunday to Sunday and enjoy an 8 day break instead (or in my previous scenario, work Monday-Sunday)? Surely these grand ideas I'm having would benefit students, parents and teachers alike? Granted, we all could be VERY exhausted and not want to budge during the Golden Week! (thus not spending any money!)

If you work at a public school just make sure your contract states you will work monday-friday. If there is nothing like this in your contract you might be given surprises like this.

Chinese still haven't grasped the concept that a holiday should be a time to relax.

What if *GASP* we got Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday.

But the student's would miss one extra day of class.

Yep, an entire day out of 365[let's say there's 4-5 times you need to do it a year, an entire weeks worth of classes! Why don't they then just make the summer holiday 7 weeks not 8 weeks and let us have a proper stretch.

The degree regulations approved by the Education Dept probably stipulate x hours of instruction. Accordingly there is a limit to the amount of time that can be cribbed off the holiday.
Besides 18x90 min classes per semester is scant time to do anything worthwhile in terms of improving your student's English.

Yeah, we were supposed to, but school got cancelled anyway because of the typhoon (I'm in Guangzhou). Then the school principal decided so kindly that teachers didn't need the day off and to report to work!

As the typhoon is meant to hit tomorrow morning, also no school, but again teachers are to go in.

Today in the teachers office, we (literally) braided each others hair and plucked stray hairs off each other (Chinese & foreign alike)! It was a hoot Laughing !

All of my classes only meet once every other week. I have no problem making up classes simply because my students can't afford to miss that much! Shocked

He (double hockey sticks), the Chinese can relax hanging on a nail, or for that matter ... on a weekend buying trip to Ikea.

'Was telephoned at 11:30 Sunday morning that I missed my 10:00 class (rescheduled Friday's class).
Before the holiday, I did ask and ask again that Wed-thru-Sunday would indeed be the holiday vacation.

Not complaining, just saying....

Well excellent teaching can make up for a lesser number of classes. Razz
