I had a pleasant interview with them, but looking at their location I turned it down for a school closer to central part of the city.

There are three main areas: Taiyuan Jie, Zhong Jie, and San Hao Jie. Take a look at a map and see if you really want to work there.

When I lived there the subway was just getting built, so you could ask how long it is by bus to the nearest station (looks like it is 黎明广场 station, Limingguangchang), after that it's only 8 stations away from the central train station. However, the prices might be more expensive and when I was there it was closed much earlier than normal. Decide if night life with a taxi is a better alternative. I would prefer working around Taiyuan Jie or San Hao and stay away from the southern part south of the river.

Why stay away from the southern part?

Several reasons. It has more to do with location than the actual area.

Specifically, it stinks worse than other outer places I have visited. I had to take a bus and transfer a couple times just to get to the school for an interview. This was not an enjoyable experience at all, and I am one of those people who will buy vegetables from the street people instead of going to decent supermarkets.

Aside from that, there is also a more impartial reason not to live there. Transportation in and out of that area is more difficult to deal with. The bus in Shenyang has a loop path. This is common thing for cities in China, Beijing has several of these loops or rings.

A taxi driver might take you somewhere if they can pick up other people, but usually they won't accept driving you if it is an inconvenience to them. There is a certain path cars can take when entering a city. So, on a map it might look simple but when you get in a taxi they will drive and take a longer path. Sometimes because they want to get more money, but sometimes this isn't the situation. They are simply stuck going against traffic and must take a detour relative to where you want to go.

I found the best place to use taxis is near zhongshan road. They can take you into and out of the city quickest. You can take a loop bus near the station to get to san hao jie. If you use bicycles, then perhaps you don't need to worry about transportation but in winter it will get messy and cold.

Shopping is another factor. There are many shopping malls in the center of the city. Further out is more difficult to get what you want. Shenyang has a shopping mall near the train station which I think is the best I have been to. Each floor has different restaurants varying from Chinese provinces to Japanese to Korean to Thai. They are not crowded and you always get a good selection. When I moved to San Hao Jie, I couldn't find similar places except for the romantic expensive hot pot restaurants.

There is a Korean town also near the station called Xita.

I lived in Shenyang for one year and went to the part south of the river a single time. It's pretty out-of-the-way. Shenyang is a huge city and if you live on the outskirts, getting to the center where stuff actually happens is a PITA. Taking a 50 yuan taxi ride, each way, to get anywhere interesting gets expensive and still isn't that fast... think 45 minutes each way, so 90 minutes burned to get anywhere. To save money, you can take the bus, but then you're talking about 60-90 minutes EACH WAY. No thanks.

The subway only has two lines at this point so unless you are on top of one of them, it's not that helpful.

Also, just to throw this out there, Shenyang has terrible nightlife for such a large city. There are a few bars/clubs you can go to, but most of them are far apart and have no patrons.
