just got the final schedule emailed to me.
12 hours per week. 3 work days. monday and friday off.
how to keep busy? beaches and bikinis may someday lose their appeal. |
Yeah, that's a nice one, then. Had that last semester.
I got the Friday off but teach Monday. Wednesday is normally off, if we don't have any department meetings.
Any way you look at it, it's a long weekend every weekend. And I like that. |

My schedule is written in stone - that has been cracked and crumbled into gravel, dumped on the ground for a new paved road to come which never does.
26 hours this week. 10 in first week. |

Thus explaining why you have problems with other people making money in China. !2 hours is essentially being unemployed, with the financial benefits thereof. Pretending to have a job whilst sitting on a beach is a way to go for some, I suppose... |

With my horrible schedule, mandatory office hours and 130 essays to grade, over the past two weeks I've averaged around 50 hours/week on school-related bull---t.
Something's gotta give.
I'm paid very well, but it's definitely not worth this agita. Ok, vent over. |

sometimes it works! this time my schedule fits the holiday perfectly!
holidays are my work days, days to be made up are my off days.
this year's national day will be 11 straight days off. |

My new semester starts on Monday. Public University.
Schedule is
Mon 8~11:30 and 1:30~5 (somewhat hideous)
Tues 1:30~3:00
Thurs 1:30~3:00
Teaching the same subject the entire time so prep should be fairly minimal. Don't want to jinx myself too badly, but all in all I'm pretty happy. |

The Tuesday and Thursday are not the best timing.
I've always preferred to get the hours on the light duties days done and dusted in the morning.
This means you can take off for lunch or whatever.
Early afternoon classes tend to get in the way of both halves of the day.
That said, I agree that you don't want to jinx yourself.
After a couple of weeks check with your class monitors if they have free periods earlier in the day. They may want the afternoon off as well.
Checking with students means you don't pursue lost causes with the Admin and get a rep as a moaner. |

I dunno, man - I'm generally happy with the later starts. I find I'm perpetually tired with the 8am kick offs, even if it's just 90 minutes and then done by 9.30 or so. I found my lessons were crappier too...I'd tend to plan the night before, forget everything by the next day and be tired and the brain not working well enough to deliver quality classes magnified by the students being half asleep too. Not to mention for moi waking in the dark in -5 degree weather is for the dogs. But hey, each to their own. I'll leave the schedule as is. |

I agree. Early starts are always horrible for this teacher and the pupils too. Some people are early risers and others are clearly not. I've tried everything in the book to reverse this to no avail. Just have to accept it and try to get all classes put in the arvo. Goodluck with that! |

Where do you work? Basically you work one pretty normal day for a developed economy - the west, Hong Kong, Singapore etc - the stroll in for 90 mins two other days. I'd be pretty happy with that, too. |

Ugh.
Many posters have repeatedly informed this forum that contact hours aren't readily compared because of the significant differences between language schools, (public/private) primary/secondary schools, and university classes. The job descriptions vary widely and involve issues of autonomy, expertise, and pay.
I've responded because an implication is made the responsibility of some positions is minimal due to China's relative development to the west...a fairly silly explanation. Besides, over the last 15 years, what defines a 'pretty normal day' in the west anyway? Sharing economies? Stagnant wages? A distribution of wealth not seen since the 1920s? The security of 9 to 5 with benefits, two weeks vacation, and planning for retirement has become a myth for many millennials.
No offense to the poster intended-- I understand asking about so few contact hours, but it's been stated repeatedly: University positions involve preparation unlike other TEFL positions. |

Starts on Monday? Most public universities are about to go on holidays. |
