I am going to be in China to teach at Tsinghua University in January. Is there anyplace I can start learning Chinese on-line for free that someone here can recommend? Thanks! |

Memrise isn't bad for a start.
http://www.memrise.com/
Although they'll spam the shit out of your email account, so register using an alternate address or just have all their messages directed to a junk folder. |

Thanks for the tips, I hooked up with the China Foreign Teachers Union and will take the free Chinese Lessons they give at Peking University on Weekends. The other choice turned me off because of the spam, but thanks guys. |

very clever, young sockpuppy!
pretend to be a newbie, ask about "free chinese lessons," then just
happen to come across the free lessons allegedly offered by the onion.
the spam is strong in this one. |

It must be satisfying on some maternal/paternal level to flesh out new alter-egos after old ones get boring or get historied into a corner. One mole gets hit on the head, another pops up. |

All these CFTU bashers and not one of them could answer the OP question or offer and advice related to it. I wonder how many of them are teachers and how many are recruiters/agents? |

So, you want to learn the Chinese? … Help you I can. My ally is the CFTU.
And a powerful ally it is. It is what gives an FT his power. It is the union
created by all expatriate teachers. It surrounds us, penetrates us. It binds
the profession together.
The CFTU is this and more. It cannot be fully described with words. You
must feel the CFTU to understand it. To feel the CFTU is what you will learn. |

You want to learn Mandarin, I assume. Not Chinese. Cantonese is the other major Chinese dialect. There's at least one or two more that I've heard of, but they're not popular like the two.
Why not Rosetta Stone? Or a private tutor (if you're in China.)
Also, all the name calling and snide remarks are really irritating and immature. Who moderates this forum? I have a lot of teacher friends, and they don't expose this kind of behavior. |

Rosetta Stone is super expensive and in the OP I waslooking for "Free". As I mentioned the CFTU gives free basic Chinese classes (16 two hour sessions for free) at Peking University on Saturday and Sundays and also at Fudan University in Shanghai. The details are on their website. They also give a free "cross-cultural communication and awareness" to new arrivals. |

Kickass has a whopping 20GB file available for download also. Has varying levels (can just choose which you'd like to D/L) including Hanzi, Conversation, Listening etc.

There are Rosetta Stone - Mandarin files available on there for free also, but according to the comments using the pirated activation code makes the thing run a bit gooky. |
