Approximately 300 students that I see once a week? A few standouts (good or bad standouts), but, no, not most of them. I have them sit in the same seats for every class and that makes it easier during the class (with a seating chart), but......

Yes, same seats and a seating plan on your desk is absolutely essential for say the first three weeks with a class.

After that, maybe let them move if you think you can remember their names.

I have a total of 87 students. Very few have English names , and the others do not want them , I can hardly say their names, and I can only say them if they trip rat them many times.

I have them sit in the same seats for the first half of the class, and they can move later,

It's a good idea it ask them to bring in a photo and I will do
O that after the holiday

I was able to remember 200 students that I saw twice a week.

Twice a week vs once a week is a big deal. Once a week, I can remember a few per class (the good students and the hot girls.) Twice a week, I can remember 95% by the end of the semester. Like, I can see them outside the class and call them by name.

Right now I have 125 students, all twice a week. I will know most of their names within the next month.

I take a picture of all of my students for this very purpose, and I practice at home during the first week, by week 2 I know 85% and by week 3 100%. With children/teens its very important to know their names because "Hey you....you.... yea you, stop" doesn't work when trying to discipline or get the attention of a 7 year old.

Holy crap. Seriously?Your dedication makes me ashamed.I just call all the girls Lucy and the boys are Bob.I have a *30%chance of being right...that's close enough for me.

I have maybe 480 (40x12) students that I only see every other week. It'll be an accomplishment if I remember a third of their names by the end of the semester, especially since most of them don't have English names. Laughing

I have two classes at the moment. 5 students in one, 7 students in the other. I see each class for 90 minutes each day, 5 times a week. I know their names after about 45 minutes Laughing

Until she changes it Laughing

I usually see about 100 students a week. I see them twice a week and usually can get the names down after a few weeks. In the past we have had the English Class instructors force them to get an appropriate English (French, German, Spanish, etc) name. I hope it continues, because I get tired of explaining how badly their names could be pronounced.

Stay far far away from public schools and university work. I teach adults in a training centre and small classes streamed by ability is one of the key factors for me.

Have them make simple name cards with a small piece of cardboard folded in half, with their name written on it with a black marker, and maybe their favourite hobby/colour/food etc.

Have your name card too on your desk or podium. It takes about a minute to make. Some of the girls might even doll it up to look prettier.

Works a charm! I'm also terrible with names but this is helping. Don't know why I didn't think of this 11 years ago, when I started teaching.

I have no problem remembering students names. It's matching the names up with faces that I have problems with. Smile
