When I was in Henan many college students studied German but now that I am living in a coastal province (Fujian) I don't hear about my college students studying German at all here. |

NEVER heard of German when I was in Henan (2008-11); never heard of it anywhere in China. French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish....
Perhaps they had someone who taught German and another language and decided to make the best use of their human resource. |

According to the German Chamber of Commerce there are now 1,379 JV operation in China and I suppose it is a lot cheaper to hire foreigners locally than to import them from Germany. |

If you're teaching at a Normal University, then students who are studying to become English teachers are required to study a second foreign language as well - German seems to be the one on the menu most often (or that's because I know the DaF teachers). Engineering students often want to the land of the Autobahnen too, so they try to mug up on the lingo.
Not being in-country at present, it could also be there are more trendy reasons of which I am not aware. |

Germany represents everything the Chinese aspire to but likely will never be - uber-organized, rule adhering, hard working, efficient, producers of high quality products. Able to bitch slap pesky neighboring countries and minorities at will.
What's not to love, huh? |

It could be because Germany has recently been named as the most supportive country for overseas students.
Most German universities do not charge fees for overseas students. Tuition is FREE.
