Hi Khmerhit,
I have been reading your posts now for more than seven months and have noted how hooked you are on Cambodia. Have you even lived and taught in China? If so, please compare them for me.
I have no intention of leaving this School, or China, because of my Orphans now depending on me, but if I were ever to leave here, Cambodia is the place I have always thought I would head for.
I only wish that I was 20 years younger, and then I could experience living in more countries, but time is running out for me. Even though I am grateful for my life now, I still envy all you young guys who have the world at your feet. GO FOR IT!
I have 13 people arriving from SWEDEN this Friday. They are four families who have each adopted a little girl from my Orphanage in 1994 and they are bringing the girls back here to see where they were born. I am very excited about their visit except for the fact that they failed to go through the proper channels and get permission from the Department of Civil Affairs to visit the CLOSED Orphanage. They are now relying on me to get them through this Saturday so I can only hope and pray that I can pull it off. So, as you can see, I am now entrenched in matters relating to my Orphanage and really cannot leave.
Glad you are so happy in Cambodia, but I really would be interested to hear about your daily life, school, the town, etc. |

Dear khmerhit,
Hmm, you may have a "live one" here, you unofficial official spokesman for Cambodia. On second thought - nope. You'll NEVER get Rhonda away from those orphans.

John, you are right as usual, but I was thinking of maybe going there in my next summer break for a couple of months.
This summer I am returning to Australia - mainly because (a) I already have the return ticket (b) I want to earn some money at my old job for 2 - 3 days per week for the Orphanage and (c) I can buy my Orphans some interesting toys etc. while I am there for next Christmas.
That is the last time I intend going to Australia though. From then on I wish to travel to other places during my long breaks. |

He's really got me interested in it. Another question, just as curious, is why he ISN'T in Cambodia right now?
If I'm pumped up about a place, like China, then I'd want to stay there!

I can't speak for Khmer Hit, obviously, but I've visited Cambodia on a couple of occasions, and each time I vowed I would return.
There's something a little unreal about a place where it seems everyone is trying desperately to get ahead. Not in a "climb on top of other people to get there" in a sort of way, but in a dogged, persevering "I'm doing this for my family" point of view. I lost count of people who had endured terrible things done to their families, but who were determined to succeed and get out of poverty. I once had the honour of being invited to an English lesson, run by the Cambodian teacher of my motorbike driver. This guy was teaching 40+ people English using "Brighter Grammar" (a really old grammar book by Longman) and he got the whole class to sing to me "ABC D EFG, HI JK LMNOP" (The Alphabet song.)
Faced with such enthusiasm, you cannot feel anything but moved.
I doubt you would earn a fortune teaching in Cambodia, but it's always been on my mind to return and give a little back.
On a frivolous note, I've never seen a bunch of people laugh more than Khmers. Then you see the sense of humour evident in a lot of the religious carvings at Angkor, and you realise they're descendants of quite an ironic tradition. |

Dear khmerhit,
After reading that message board, I see what you mean about "the madness".

Cambodian cops say use of bananas no slip up
Thu 1 April, 2004 08:03
PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Police in Cambodia have been accused of extracting confessions from two teenagers by force-feeding them bananas until they felt sick.
Koh Santopheap newspaper said the pair were subjected to the unorthodox interrogation after being arrested on Sunday night on suspicion of stealing five bags of soap powder from a car parked in the impoverished southeast Asian nation's capital.
However, top Cambodian policeman Yim Simony denied any official wrong doing.
"They were hungry and annoyed and they refused to answer our questions," he told Thursday's edition of the Cambodia Daily. "But after they ate the bananas, they answered the questions."

MESSAGE FOR MARK-O in taiwan
(sorry Mark i deleted yr message by mistake)
no worries about bailing. one or two schools use contracts, and perhaps a few hold back your first week's pay, but that's as formal as it gets in contractual terms.

I hope Cambodian magic pizza is the herbal sprinkle variety rather than the mushroom topping like in Bali |

The amazing sense of adventure you get when you cross into Cambodia. When you cross from Vietnam into Cambodia there is about 100 yards of no-mans land that you have to cross. Cars aren't (I don't believe) allowed to cross in either direction and there is a huge frame from a semi that is packed up one one end and pushed to the other with goods.
It really feels like you are crossing into another world.
Also, comming from the other direction going from Hat Lek to PP you get four amazing river crossings. |
