Yes, the university official would drive the new employee to the dorms and a friend would lend her an abaya or she would have her own, but if she were to refuse at that point, she would be stuck in the dorms until she put it on.

The university does not send an "official" to the airport. They send a driver. We do not live in dormitories. We live in apartment buildings. There is no one policing us, per se. The building security guards may or may not report us to human resources, but generally they're too busy napping or eating to notice.

MY university sent an HR official who drove ME to the DORMS and a friend lent ME her abaya; and if A WOMAN in KSA were to refuse to wear an abaya at that point, she would be stuck in the dorms until she put it on.

My apologies for not noticing that the OP mentioned that her friend's university and yours were one in the same. I suppose that there are women at your university who have refused to wear an abaya and have not been escorted out of KSA. I only mention the abaya as an example of the first rule that the friend of the OP would probably have to swallow.

Not in the KSA. It's pay back the airfare and one month's wages or possibly jail time until they decide to let you go home. If the OP comes she will wear an Abaya and unless she's on the way to Carrefour a scarf also.

Yes Mr Suspicious... LOL

She got her question answered, admits that she is a worrier, and stepped out... while the discussion has carried on without her. Yes... the friend exists.

As soon as she gets off the plane in the airport and says, "I'm not putting that black thing on," the university will put her on the next flight out. The officials who must deal with her at the airport are not going to risk the university's reputation. Eventually, it will be the shaila or the abaya or the curfews or something, but she will not be jailed, just discreetly swept under the rug on the next flight out before she proves to be an embarrassment.

Can I give this a thumbs up?? maybe do like fat_chris and give it +1. Wink
It blows my mind how some of us are struggling to get back in and how some view "the rules" as a total violation of their right to make $$ in a foreign country. PUT UP OR SHUT UP. Mad

Haha! Oh! Here I am, by coincidence. I am in the final year of a contract and thinking about what is next. Applying to universities in Saudi Arabia has crossed my mind so I decided to check out some of the postings here.

Wow! THIS was the very first thread I read here in the Saudi Arabia forum.

Hmm…let me start again.

If I do end up in Saudi Arabia, I will play by the rules. I promise!

Warm regards,
fat_chris

I'll leave it up to the good people who hire and fire in the Magic Kingdom to decide if I am needed or not.

Happy Fat Tuesday!
