No doubt it will not have escaped your attention about the new reform package presented by the Prime Minister to the country. One of the more talked about items being to allow headscarfed women to enter and even work in public buildings where previously it was not allowed.
Do you think that the true natüre of the so called "Islamic agenda" by the AK party is now starting to emerge?
When the next election is called and once again this party triumphs, will it be because the country has no other alternative to the ruling party or will it be the general belief that only real economic and political progress is only possible with the AK party? |

No.
Women in Turkey have the right to wear whatever they want, this is a human right issue, and is not acceptable that a government impose a rule on what women should wear or not wear in public buildings!

Let the people of Turkey decide on who will govern them. This is the rules of democracy, if they are not happy under the AK party, then let them choose an alternative. |

Well, I guess as far as the economy of Turkey is blooming, the majority of Turks will be behind Erdogan and will remain so.
I do not see any other better alternatives , at least in the short and medium terms. |

Human rights in Turkey? Always a messy area. How about the right to be nude? Eh? Same as the right to wear a head scarf? |

Ah, but Sash. Not so many western countries allow nudity quite so readily as they allow head scarves, either;-) |

Well, Turkey is not Germany, and what is considered to be normal with nudity in Germany is not normal in Turkey or even in some European countries, or even in Moskva!
The cultural beliefs about nudity differ from a country to another.
I am sure if you put the question "do you accept nudity in public" in a referendum to the Turkish people, the majority will reject it.
BTW, did not Putin sign a draconian anti-gay law banning speech, rainbows, holding hands, or wear the rainbow flag in public in Russia?
Moskva is not Berlin!
It seems Moskva is not anymore the workers' paradise, it is the workers' hell! |

So, what you are saying is if the majority back something, then it is a human rights issue for a government to deny it. Is that right? Let's ignore the issue of minority rights for argument's sake, and take this line to its logical conclusion.
The majority of French people back the banning of religious clothing and symbols in schools and unis etc. The vast majority of Russians back the counter-propaganda laws too. Would be a violation of their rights to go against their express wishes. In Turkey, though, I am not so sure that a 'scarf' referendum would result in a win for the government. A funny old place, is Turkey... |

Yes, of course that is so. But let's not bleat 'human rights' when it clearly is not that type of issue. Especially in Turkey, where there are bigger issues entirely. That's all I be sayin'... |

Can't fault this line of logic!
So it would appear that the next election is in the bag then?? |

Have to be careful with words like 'majority', especially in a PR electoral system.
Now, for more reforms: no more Efes beer; bikinis; pop music; minority rights. The 'majority' will back this. So long as the economy doesn't collapse, again. |

Nice idea sasha, but, the economy does rely heavily on tourism for a lot of its income, with those things gone or restricted then the whole issue goes down the toilet. |

The touristy areas are all dotted along the western coastline. Few visitors venture into the interior, except perhaps to Istanbul, or Cappadocia, and maybe, maybe Ankara. So it would not so hard to make special alcohol zones for the foreigners. The vast majority all mostly stay in the beach resorts to begin with. Economy protected. The pious majority satisfied. |

Really? If it was that simple it would have been done by now!
The most pious area in Turkey happens to be an area known as Konya, it also happens to have the highest Raki consumption in the country! Now work that one out, smartie! |

Dear sixthchild,
That's easy - hypocrisy.
