Hey, I was recently presented with a passing offer to teach English in Iran. I've never considered teaching in the Middle East before but an offer to teach in Iran has piqued my curiosity and I can easily see myself doing a short term contract there. So, anyone here have any experience teaching in Iran? I'd like to hear your opinions on the matter.

I taught in Iran for several years pre -revolution. Liked it so much that I married an American educated. Iranian and planned to stay there long term. 2500 year history and culture that produces an incredible array of handicrafts, (carpets, metal work, art, music, wonderful cuisine ) to name a few. Students certainly more motivated than Gulf students.
Now, I think you'd barely earn enough to live, and there is tremendous suspicion of westerners by government agencies and you could be arrested for spying.

The people on the other hand are very nice and hospitable, they don't hate westerners as much as their own repressive government.

Who exactly is offering a job?

In my experience I love teaching Iranians. They are some of the best learners who work hard and seem to take in what you teach. If they are not sure of an answer they will ask you so as to understand the point you're teaching, especially with grammar. They never play up in class, even the young learners are keen and well behaved.
