Dear Trip,
You're quite right, I'm not. Could you point out your point, please (and if you could keep it to one-syllable words, that'd help me understand it)?
Regards,
John |

Jeez, my advice was supposed to be implicit. I'm saying you should lie. If you aren't Muslim (and hence lack the letters) you can just as easily lie and say you are, you were born Muslim.
Mecca is lovely this time of year. |

Why you should lie?
If you are not a Muslim, say so, you will get your visa and no letter required, so that your iqama will state that you are not Muslim. No problem.
Of course everybody was born Muslim, and I am not lying.

But how would you see the leaves change in Mecca this fall? |

This is very true. But neither is working in Saudi Arabia in general. |

I think saying you"re Muslim when you're not would cause some problems. For one thing, you'd need to learn some Arabic:
"What is required of every Muslim is to be able to read surat Al-Fatihah and some other passages of the Qur'an in Arabic to enable him/her to offer his/her prayers. "
Not too bad, but worse is that at work, when all the Muslims go to prayer, you'd better go,too; otherwise, sooner or later, you're going to get called on it.
And then there's Ramadan.

Dear Wilsonthefarmer,
"Well, this is very true for people with major depressive disorder! "
Well, if you don't have one when you get there, it probably won't take too long to acquire one.
I was there quite a while, and even a normally happy-go-lucky guy such as myself underwent some bouts with the "black dog."
Let's face it, for many/most Westerners, it can be an oppressive place. And no matter how you might try to occupy yourself, it's virtually inevitable that's going to take its toll, sooner or later.
Regards,
John |

Yeah that's easy. You just say you're a bad Muslim, but you're trying. They love that. |

Well, morally speaking, supporting a country who is at the very bottom of the women's rights rankings, where billions of dollars in oil money (yes, oil money) are used to support global terrorism in the name of Wahab, where public executions against TCNs run rampant, yet Saudis get off with no punishment for the same crime, where southeast Asian housemaids are lured over, enslaved, abused, and then murdered...some might say that, morally, one is bankrupt upon arrival. |
