What step?

"Three female members of the Saudi Shura council have urged the kingdom to lift the driving ban on women in Saudi"

I hope it happens but I'm not holding my breath. And if it does happen they will probably only let female foreigners get licenses initially.

She is driven to her palatial Riyadh digs by an Indian, however.

For those of you who missed this:

Great fun. The police were all smiles. Many Saudi women drive at night - after compound curfew time when you're all tucked up in bed marking homework.

It isn't as good as the Yorkshire cover version,
called "No Woman, No Pie" , of course...
but the Saudi cover of the Bob Marley classic
does have its moments....

Why do all those pinko liberals in the Anglosphere get so excited about the prospect of Saudi women being allowed to drive ?

Far be it from me to speak for all "pinko liberals in the Anglosphere" and can only speak for this pinko liberal female who has at least known and lived in this part of the world. In countries like those in the Gulf (and the USA), IMHO not having a car is like being in a prison... with a jailer who decides when you can go - where you can go - and how long you can stay.

Millions of us live in places where there is no public transport as it is where Scot lives. Employers don't provide rides and your workmates with vehicles very likely get tired of your mooching. Hiring taxis is too expensive in most countries.

Being able to drive a car liberates a person. It is a step.

But in reality, it is none of our business and is up to the women of Saudi Arabia to push the margins of their lives and we should keep our noses out of it. On their side, they have the fact that every other Muslim country allows women to drive.

The same is true with having locks requiring keys on both sides of the lock, a key to get in and a key to get out

I have to say that there are issues with women driving here in Saudi Arabia. I am for women's rights and all that pinko stuff, but the logistics here are just overwhelming.

First of all, the roads and conditions of the roads are not to inviting even for men. I'm not saying that women can't overcome these. Just stating the fact that an additional amount of drivers on the roads will deteriorate the road conditions faster.

Second, the women that have their drivers driving them to universities will be replaced by themselves driving to universities and causing the same amount of congestion and maybe even more for parking purposes. All those cars will now require parking instead of just dropping off students. Let us not forget the university female staff that will also require parking.

Third, and what I believe is the most important is the alpha male complex and road rage incidents. Will women be able to defend themselves against raged men drivers with kalashnikovs in their boots (trunks of cars).

Well I am sorry if you women see me as a party pooper but these are some of the realities here, and if you see yourselves driving here in the very near future, you may want to consider these points.

I personally do not have any issues with women driving here. I also do not play in traffic with ragers. I let them proceed in their dangerous course hoping (praying really) to see them in a pile-up further down the highway. You know, one less idiot on the road is a good thing. Right? But the pile-up that these ragers can cause could be with sensible drivers, and that I attribute to natural selection and the Darwinian theory of evolution.

For most of my 17 years in KSA I lived perfectly well without a car ! As for human rights I can think of many issues that could excite me more than the right of rich women to drive.

Yes, but you are missing the fact that if the rich women manage to wrest this right, poor women will also get it... and this opens up opportunities for employment and perhaps even an education leading to a better job.

Don't hold down other people because it is a right that you don't need.

What will "Top Gear" make of this development?

http://riyadhconnect.com/first-womens-only-car-showroom-to-open-in-riyadh/

It is reported to be 'the first of its kind in the kingdom'.

Is there another one in another country?!

I WONDER if these will be displayed:

"Kia unveils Wonder Woman-themed Sportage SUV at New York auto show
by autoweek.com & Bruce Walters Ford Lincoln Kia

Kia has given its Sportage SUV a flashy new design influenced by the heroine Wonder Woman and it even comes with the superhero's tiara."
