To be fair, Americans could stomp all over much of the world last century with barely a hindrance. If you're not actively travelling, as many Americans aren't, then it will take time for the culture to catch up with the reality outside.

Quite possible. This year I've met Polish and Latvians that are currently working as English teachers at Academies here in Spain.

RosinDubh -- I'll go you one better, smart guy; I think I'm entitled to live wherever I want without working for a living at all. But being that this is a capitalist world until or unless I become a famous novelist I must sell my labor power for wages, and that's why I'm trying to find out about Spain.

You seem. like any loyal and obedient flag-waving type, to think you have a God-given right to live in Europe by dint of having parents who were nice enough to allow you to be born there. Anyone should be able to go wherever they please. That applies to folks trying to get into the US as well as to those of us who are trying to get out.

I believe that Rosin is a girl's name.

That aside, however, this is not a matter of God-given rights, but legal restrictions. Whatever our beliefs about the right to travel where ever we want, the laws of the land remain. And in the EU, Americans without European passports, or some other special circumstance, do not have much chance at all of securing legal work in most jurisdictions. Unfair? Irrelevant. So, just come on over to Russia, and leave the capitalist piggie race. Write your novel! A socialist realist one! : )
