There is a lot I would change about the CELTA and Cert TESOL programs if I were in a position to do so.

They are outdated in many ways though I'm not sure it's due to latent imperialism. many of the people involved come from very upper class backgrounds so perhaps there is an inevitable slant.

CELTAs can be done extensive over 13 weeks with about 2 days a week in class and a lot of self study. That is probably the ideal if trainees could be trusted to focus on it and not work part time on the side!

It's a 4-5 week course for marketing purposes. The biggest cost for most is a month off work. If you've really done your pre-course reading and focus on it full time it is easily doable. But you mustn't fall behind with any tasks or they will mount up and swamp you.

But if you treat it like university you will get into problems.

Another big issue for many trainees is thinking it is 'education'. It is TRAINING. Trainer say monkey - whoops - trainee do. There is no room to discuss/question the methods presented. This can be a problem for some people (and I can see why).
