Most Americans have it drilled into their heads that they have to file a return even if they have no US-earned income to report and no W-2 form. Not so. This is from the instructions on "Who Has to File" taken from Form 1040:

. If my foreign earned income is below the foreign earned income exclusion threshold amount, am I still required to file a U.S. individual income tax return?
Yes, since the foreign earned income exclusion is voluntary, you must file a tax return to claim the foreign earned income exclusion. It does not matter if your foreign earnings are below the foreign earned income exclusion threshold.
There are specific requirements that you must satisfy to be eligible to claim the foreign earned income exclusion. See the “Foreign Earned Income and Housing: Exclusion – Deduction” section in Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad for more details. |

| I appreciate all the info shared so far. I did demand that my salary be quoted both before AND after tax. Probation at this position is only for 1 month and at an 10% reduction, and I requested the employer to go up to 18,000 from 17,000 to compensate for the probation, which I assume IS standard for China. After all, I am flying there on my own dime, right? |

No. Pay reduction during probation is NOT standard. You're not getting airfare reimbursement? |

| The airfare reimbursement is usually in the contract as a flat rate. Take it or leave it. |

I find this out every time I ask for a set of rules or regulations and just get laughed/scoffed at. "How absurd of a thing to ask for!" |
